Course Descriptions

Lactation 103 "Full Lactation Clinical Internship"
This comprehensive lactation internship is intended to assist the participant in developing lactation clinical skills in all areas of clinical lactation practice including inpatient, outpatient, specialty units, community sites, and office sites. All areas of the IBLCE competency skills checklist will be mastered .

More Information

Participants will be able to:
-	Observe experienced IBCLCs in contracted practice areas
-	Receive guidance through the process of increasing their clinical lactation skills
-	Independently perform all aspects of lactation consultant practice under the supervision of experienced IBCLC mentor(s)

Prerequisites:
-	Comprehensive lactation management course of 45 or more clock hours within the last two years
-	Lactation clinical internship chief mentor approval
-	Successful completion of at least 75% of the didactic sheets on maternal and infant conditions from the required workbook Clinical Experience in Lactation: A Blueprint for Internship, 2nd edition by Barger & Kutner (available through ILCA), before on-site clinical hours may begin.

Learning will be assessed by:
-	Written didactic (condition specific) sheets from the workbook Clinical Experience in Lactation: A Blueprint for Internship, 2nd edition by Barger & Kutner (available through ILCA)
-	Observation and supervision of clinical practice of the participant
-	Pre- and post-clinical conferences with experienced IBCLC mentor(s)
-	Written patient experience summaries

Feedback is given verbally as well as in written form. Written feedback is given through daily evaluation forms during at least the first 50 clinical hours, then through weekly/monthly evaluation forms, as negotiated by mentor and participant (based on the frequency and schedule of clinical days). Who should attend: Candidates seeking lactation certification via IBLCE's Pathway 3. Instructor(s): Mentors are experienced IBCLCs, recertified at least once (over 5 years experience). Length of course: A minimum of 750 hours to be completed over approximately 1 year; includes some observation time. NOTE: This program is designed to meet the IBLCE's 500 hour supervised internship requirement. Candidates must apply for IBLCE Pathway 3 mentored clinical internship plan approval prior to the start of clinical internship (see IBLCE). Mentors will assist the candidates with this process. Candidates must also apply to IBLCE for the certification exam, according to the exam application guide (see IBLCE).

Lactation 201 "Partial Lactation Clinical Internship"
This course is intended for individuals preparing to sit for the IBLCE exam, who already qualify based on Pathway 1 or who have some recent (within the last two years) clinical experience hours (as a nurse, breastfeeding educator, La Leche League leader, WIC nutritionist, etc.) but need specific inpatient and outpatient lactation clinical experiences.

-	Observe experienced IBCLCs in a variety of practice areas
-	Receive guidance through the process of increasing their clinical lactation skills in the specified areas
-	Independently perform all aspects of lactation consultant practice under the supervision of experienced IBCLC mentor(s)

Prerequisites:
-	Comprehensive lactation management course of 45 or more clock hours within the last two years
-	Evidence of at least 50% of qualifying clinical hours based on the IBLCE exam application
-	Lactation clinical internship chief mentor approval
-	Successful completion of at least 50% of the agreed upon didactic sheets related to maternal and infant conditions selected from the workbook Clinical Experience in Lactation: A Blueprint for Internship, 2nd edition by Barger & Kutner (available through ILCA), before on-site clinical hours may begin.

Learning will be assessed by:
-	Written didactic (condition specific) sheets from the workbook Clinical Experience in Lactation: A Blueprint for Internship, 2nd edition by Barger & Kutner (available through ILCA)
-	Observation of clinical practice of the participant, pre- and post-clinical conferences with experienced IBCLC mentor(s)
-	Written patient experience summaries

Who should attend: Candidates seeking lactation certification via IBLCE's Pathway 1. Instructor(s): Mentors are experienced IBCLCs, recertified at least once (over 5 years experience). Length of course: A minimum of 200 hours to be completed over less than 1 year; includes some observation time. NOTE: Candidates for certification as an IBCLC must apply to IBLCE for the certification exam, according to the exam application guide (see IBLCE).

Lactation 302 "Focused Lactation Clinical Internship"
This course is intended for individuals who are already certified as an IBCLC, or who are licensed as health care professionals, who need to add skills in a specific area of lactation support and management (e.g., NICU, outpatient, mother-baby).

Participants will be able to:
-	Observe experienced IBCLCs in a variety of practice areas
-	Receive guidance through the process of increasing their clinical lactation skills in the areas of focus
-	Independently perform all aspects of lactation consultant practice under the supervision of experienced IBCLC mentor(s)

Prerequisites:
-	Current health care license with experience in clinical areas where support of breastfeeding mother-baby pairs is included in current job description (IBCLC, nurse, dietician, physician, etc.) and/or current IBCLC certification
-	Meet with Chief Mentor to establish individual program elements and goals
-	Complete relevant didactic sheets from the workbook Clinical Experience in Lactation: A Blueprint for Internship, 2nd edition by Barger & Kutner (available through ILCA), before on-site clinical hours may begin.

Learning will be assessed by:
-	Written didactic (condition specific) sheets from the workbook Clinical Experience in Lactation: A Blueprint for Internship, 2nd edition by Barger & Kutner (available through ILCA)
-	Observation of clinical practice of the participant, pre- and post-clinical conferences with experienced IBCLC mentor(s)
-	Written patient experience summaries

Feedback is given verbally as well as in written form. Written feedback is given through daily evaluation forms or as negotiated by mentor and participant (based on the frequency and schedule of clinical days). Who should attend: Experienced licensed health care providers and IBCLCs who want to improve or expand on clinical skills. Instructor(s): Mentors are experienced IBCLCs, recertified at least once (over 5 years experience). Length of course: A minimum of 100 hours to be completed in less than 6 months; may include some observation hours depending on previous skills and experience.
