Participants are paired with mentors who are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants with at least
5 years of experience in a variety of clinical areas, and who have been recertified at least once.
Target Audience
This program is for individuals who are preparing for a job that includes providing clinical
lactation management and breastfeeding support, or for individuals who want to improve
their clinical lactation knowledge and skills. There are three
courses:
- Lactation 103 and 201 - specifically designed for people who
are preparing for certification as a lactation consultant through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).
- Lactation 302 - designed for health care providers who wish to enhance their clinical lactation
skills within their current health care qualification.
Timeline
The program length varies, depending on the individual participant's needs and which course is
selected. Lactation Clinical Internships can be anywhere from 100 to 1,000 hours in length, and
may be completed over several weeks, or may extend over 1-2 years. For someone who is preparing
for lactation consultant certification, and who has already completed a comprehensive lactation
management didactic course, at least one year should be allowed for a full clinical internship before
the annual July IBLCE exam.
