Surgical Technology (ST)

The Surgical Technology program prepares students to become an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients.

Some of the responsibilities of a surgical technologist include:

- preparing surgical supplies and instruments,
- maintaining sterile conditions,
- preparing patients for surgery,
- and assisting the surgeon during operations.

Surgical Technologists ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that all of the equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Employment opportunities for surgical technology graduates are exceptional.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "employment of surgical technologists is expected to grow 25 percent between 2008 and 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations as the volume of surgeries increases." (Source: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos106.htm)

Surgical technologists are employed in hospital operating rooms, delivery rooms, ambulatory surgery centers, and clinics.

Our program offers diplomas and Associate of Science in Surgical Technology (ST) degrees. Both diploma and degree graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified Surgical Technologists Certification Examination. To earn a diploma, you will complete the core ST courses in the first year. To earn an associate degree, you will complete the same core ST courses as diploma students during the first year and then continue into a second year with general education courses and advanced surgical training.
